Hundreds of patients and medical staff began evacuating the besieged Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Saturday, as the Israeli military tightens its control of the medical complex, which it accuses Hamas of using as a military command center. On Saturday morning, at least 450 patients began walking from the hospital toward the southern part of the enclave, the director general of Gaza’s health ministry, Munir al-Bursh, told the Al Jazeera television channel. Patients were pushed in wheelchairs and on gurneys, and some hobbled on crutches, according to witnesses speaking to the channel.

Officials from Israel and Gaza presented different accounts of what was happening at Al Shifa Hospital. Zarquot said “the tunnel they claim to be a Hamas tunnel is actually an electrical wire assembly point. The World Health Organization has recorded at least 137 attacks on health facilities in Gaza, which it said resulted in 521 deaths and 686 injuries. Intense hostilities surrounding several hospitals in northern Gaza are preventing safe access for health staff, the injured, and other patients” the statement reads. Israel has alleged a Hamas center is hidden in the basement there, a claim which the hospital staff and Hamas have denied.

CNN —A US official with knowledge of American intelligence says Hamas has a command node under the Al-Shifa hospital, uses fuel intended for it and its fighters regularly cluster in and around Gaza’s largest hospital. The information comes after comments made Sunday by a top White House official that Hamas is using hospitals and civilian facilities. Hamas and hospital officials have denied the accusation that the hospital is being used as a command center. But Israel has insisted that patients can be evacuated from the hospital. “Regrettably, the hospital is not functioning as a hospital anymore,” it said.

Babies at Al-Shifa hospital were moved to a different part of the complex overnight after the neonatal unit ran out of oxygen, a senior health official in Gaza tells CNN. The oxygen in the neonatal unit had earlier run out after a generator was damaged due to a nearby strike, Al Bursh added, which led to the deaths of three babies since Friday night. Staff say they are under siege from Israeli forces and unable to leave the hospital, though an Israeli military spokesperson has denied that. At a briefing Saturday evening, Daniel Hagari said hospital staff had requested assistance to move the babies out of Al Shifa altogether, to a safer hospital. Al-Shifa is the largest hospital in Gaza.
